Is it ever going to warm up around here? This is reported to be the longest cold winter since they began keeping records!! It was great today--had some fishermen out, but tomorrow, it is going to rain and the wind is going to howl again and it is going to be near freezing! This is FLORIDA, folks! In spite of the cruddy weather, we had some wonderful guests and some even came in with a camera full of photos of beautiful bass! Locals caught some nice specks on FRiday PM and Saturday. Sunday it blew and today was nice, but the water was about 59 degrees. Thanks to Mike, Mitch, Doug, Jerry and Dave who braved the elements and fished for 3 days. Some of them were successful and some were not, but a great time was had by all! Shiners and Senkos both brought in some fish. Had some nice folks from Kentucky who really didn't like our weather, but said it was much better than where they came from. They spent 3 days here, went to Garcia on Sunday but again, the weather didn't do much for fishing anywhere. I caught 3 bluegill (nice ones) off our dock this morning with worms, but those poor fish were the coldest to touch that I have ever encountered. Almost felt sorry for them . I put them back. Lew HArrison and his wife, Donna, are here for several days. He fly fishes did not do well in that department, so he catfished and got a bunch of those yummies. Weatherman says that better times are coming, beginning this next weekend and I certainly hope so. The water really needs to be several degrees warmer, but it won't take long to warm up if we get some days with warm sunshine. Hopefully, next week, I can brag a little bit. And hopefully, shiners will again come to bait so the shiner fisherman can make a living, and bring us some nice bait. I'll keep you infomed. Tillnext week, good fishing and God Bless. |

Believe it or not, we had the temp. guage hit 77 today, and tomorrow is supposed to be 81! Then, naturally, it is going to get cold again, but only for a few days so hopefully the water temps will remain warm enough to get the fish really active. Saturday was a full day, but the numbers were not great. Jerry Jackson landed a 7 1/2 lb. fish on a shiner. He toldme he was south of the Village on the west side, but fishermen do tell stories! Shiners have been non-existant and so fishing with artificials, for the most part, was a necessity. My neighbor, George, who lives in the COLD NORTH, is here for a few months, and he is a real speck fisherman. He kept 18 today, jigging, but he didn't mention where! Can't say as I blame him. Fly fisherman, Lou Harrison had some nice bluegills today, coming from the south end, and he also had a cooler full of beautiful catfish, supposedly from the south trees. Big M has given up some bass, with Super Flukes (watermelon red) taking the most. Water levels are wonderful, and we just hope the St. John's Water Mis-Management does not decide to pull water from the lake any time soon. For what was supposed to be a dry season, we have been blessed with quite a bit of rain. Maybe the worst of the weather is gone for a while and we can get back to normal in the fishing department. Ospreys are everywhere and will begin nesting soon. We also have a couple of pair of eagles along with a wide variety of other birds! If you are in our area, give us a chance to show you what Blue Cypress has to offer. Don't think you will be sorry. Till next week, good fishing and God Bless. |

Well, if I had much to report, I'd fill up a page, but with the weather like it is, (worse, much worse elsewhere) and the wind blowing like crazy, very few have ventured out in any body of water anywhere close by. Even Miami Garcia had only one truck in it today when I took some shiners over there. We actually had 3, all of whom caught fish, but not a lot. You can hide in the ZigZag, but you have to get there first. Over not so bad, coming back not so good because the wind has been south-southwest for the past 3 days. The weekend is supposed to be nice and much warmer, but I'll believe that when I see it. Had a guide out Monday and he fished hard, but no big fish--actually 3 1/2 lbs. was the best he could do. Specks are scarce too, with the water temps way too low. Hopefully, I can do better next week, but just couldn't do it today. Till next week, good fishing and GodBless. |

Sure wish I could tell you that the parking lot was full of satisfied fishermen this past week, but it was not like that! Weather did not cooperate at all, with winds and rain and crud! Most folks around this time want to speck fish, but with the lake so rough, it was impossible to troll, and the fish were hard to find in the shallow water. Bassin', on the other hand, wasnot bad. Fish up to about 6 lbs were caught, mostly with artificials, and they were caught in the canals around the Village. The females are getting heavy with roe, but no bloody tails and most are in water about 6 feet deep. The water temps are still in the low 60's and since it got colder lastnight, I don't know what they are today. Seems like Mother Nature is not going to give Florida a break for a while. There are lots and lots of catfish out there! And lots and lots of warmouth. Those little fish, while are not very big, can really give you a run for your money! And 'they hit on worms, minnows or whatever gets in their way. We may not have any armored catfish left. So many dies in the cold water. However, if there are any left, they will be back!! I hope I can talk Joe into going fishing today, but that remains to be seen. If I go, I'll let you know. Foir the birders, the osprey are everywhere and beginning to build and get ready to settle down for their eggs. It is an interesting site to watch. Hopefully, next week, I will have a terrific report, but as things are, I have to be honest. FYI-we were able to find some wild shiners for a really decent price and will sell them for $16.00/dz. here at the shop. Call if you need some. Till next week, good fishing andGod Bless. |

It is Sunday and the weather turned icky, so I want to get this out in case we have some decent days coming up, and it will give you all a heads up on our fishing last week. Banner week for specks! Tony and Jeanne went home today after a very successful vacation week here, and they reported that they caught at least 160 during their stay! A lot went back, as they cull their fish, and there so many smaller specks out there; these went back too. They gave Joe and me a big Ziplock with 14 filets that looked like they came out of a mold. All big and fat! For the most part, they drift and jig. They use various colors, depending on the condition of the water. Most were caught in about 4 feet, on the edges. Our good friend, Hootie, from Georgia, is a big bass fisherman, and he went home earlier this week. He prefers artificials, but will use a shiner from time to time. His biggest fish here was about 8 lbs, but he decided to try jigging for specks and although he will bass fish up in Georgia, he will most likely speck fish some too. They say it gets in your blood. Our bass are slow and lazy, with this crazy weather not helping the spawn any! We have shiners, but folks are still using plastics, and some topwater in the afternoon. The tagging is finished and if you are lucky, your trip might be paid for with a $200 tag from FWC! There were fish kills all over Florida, but mostly these were fish that are not native to our areas, like the talipia and armored cats. I have not seen any bass, bluegills or other species here. I am posting this through my host because I am locked out again, and she has to figure out what is happening. E-mails may not get through either, so give us a call if you need help or have questions. Till next week, good fishing and God Bless. |
